Classified by UNESCO as World Heritage since 2007 the Batalha Monastery, also known as Saint Mary of Victory Convent, is one of the greatest architectonic jewels of Portugal.

The building was ordered after the victory in the Ajubarrota Battle as a thankful promise by king D. João I, the Master of the Avis Order. The construction works started in 1388, under the project of Afonso Domingues.

The Batalha Monastery is nowadays the great Portuguese late Gothic Monument and the first one where the very Portuguese Manueline art featured.

In 1402 comes the Flamboyant Gothic influence by Master Huguet that is in charge of the construction works, offering a new inspiration to the monument. In this period is started the construction of the Chapter’s Room vault, the Founder Chapel and the Imperfect Chapels.
Later was built the D. Afonso V Cloyster (signed by Fernão de Évora) and the cloister galleries were closed.

The Monastery had, by then, its construction works finished abruptly, probably because of the construction of other monuments, such as the majestic Belém Monastery in Lisboa. It got unfinished ever since, despite the fact that around 1840 some conservation works were made, lasting many years.

It is known that to the initial project of the Monastery correspond the several dependencies such as the Chapter House, the Refectory, the Sacristy, the Church and the Cloister, among others, in many ways similar in structural terms to the nearby project: the Alcobaça Monastery.

In Batalha Monastery is located the most important medieval stained glass windows nucleus, which can be seen in the main chapel and in the chapter house, housing as well the important archive and collection of the Ricardo Leone workshop.

Some studies revealed that a small and modest temple, known as Old Church, would have been built in the beginning of the first construction works of the Monastery, where the ceremonies for all the workmen were celebrated.

The Royal Palace of Buçaco, located on the Buçaco Woods, in Mealhada department, was projected in the end of the 19th century, by the Italian architect Luigi Manini, but also had interventions by the Architects Nicola Bigaglia, Manuel Joaquim Norte Júnior and José Alexandre Soares.

Classified as a Public Interest Building since 1996, it is integrated into an architectonic and landscape set considered to be unique in Europe, and the hotel here installed is considered to be one of the most beautiful historical hotels in the world.

The palace’s architecture is characterized by a mixture of elements gathered in monuments such as the Belém Tower, the Jerónimos Monastery or the Convent of Christ in Tomar, decorated in its interior with glazed tiles pannels, frescos and paintings allusive to the golden times of the Portuguese Discoveries.
These works of art are all signed by great Portuguese Masters, the glazed tiles by Jorge Colaço, the sculptures by António Gonçalves and Costa Mota, the paintings by João Vaz and Carlos Reis, the frescos by António Ramalho.
The furniture also constitutes an important heritage, with Portuguese pieces and also indo-Portuguese, Chinese and also several tapestries.
Yet, the very own beauty of this Palace is completed by the Gardens of the Park that magically surrounds it.
Domain of the Santa Cruz do Buçaco Convent, of the Barefoot Carmelites, founded in 1634, this is considered to be the biggest architectonic set ever built by this Order.

In the Buçaco Woods, apart from the Convent, were built 11 isolated chapels, of which only two are well conserved, four chapels, a Via Sacra itinerary with about three kilometres, a genius water good use that lead to the construction of fountains, lakes and a waterfall, all accommodated with a diversified vegetation, that is definitely a very important heritage.

The Regaleira Palace and Estate, also known as also known as the “Palace of Monteiro the Millionaire”, was built in the beginning of the 20th century, born from the imagination of its millionaire owner António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro and the Italian architect Luigi Manini.

From dream to reality was born Regaleira Estate, a combination of several artistic and architectonical styles, from Gothic to Manueline, with a Renaissance touch. The result was an unique creation, filled with magical nooks and details that disclose the union between national History and esoteric and mythic interest, inevitably associated to the mountain range of Sintra.

From the luxuriant gardens to the numerous buildings, such as the Milhões Palace, the Santíssima Trindade Chapel, or the turrets and the small palaces, the Regaleira Estate provides an entrance in an alternative dimension that one could never guess just by looking at its main gate…

Situated next to Sintra’s historical centre, the Regaleira Estate is open every day of the week. Guided visits (scheduled in advance) at 11am, 12.30pm 14.30pm and 16pm.
